Nederland is bij uitstek een fietsland en bijna iedereen zit wel dagelijks op de fiets. Bijzonder aan de fiets is dat het principe, achterwielaandrijving met tandwielen en een ketting, eigenlijk al sinds 1885 hetzelfde is. Maar daar is met de belt drive fiets verandering in gekomen. En dat terwijl de ketting toch wel wat nadelen kent, wie heeft er immers nog nooit de ketting eraf gehad?
Wat is een belt drive of riemaandrijving?
Belt drive of riemaandrijving is een vorm van aandrijving waarbij er gebruik wordt gemaakt van een riem in plaats van de traditionele ketting met tandwielen. Deze riem is gemaakt van kunststof of carbon. De riem kun je vergelijken met een distributieriem in een auto.
In dit blog vertellen wij je de grootste voor- en nadelen van de belt drive fiets.
Gates: De grootste aanbieder van belt drives
Het Amerikaanse Gates is de belangrijkste aanbieder op het gebied van belt drive voor de fiets met twee soorten. De Gates CDN belt drive is vooral gemaakt voor de recreanten of mensen die de fiets gebruiken voor woon-werkverkeer. Dan is er de sterkere Gates CDX belt drive, deze is vooral gemaakt voor sportieve stadsfietsen en de e-bikes.
De voordelen van de belt drive
- Lichter en efficiënter
De riem is gemaakt van kunststof in combinatie met carbon, dit is veel lichter dan het metaal van een traditionele ketting. Ook zitten de versnellingen van een belt drive fiets altijd in de naaf verwerkt. Hierdoor fietst en schakelt het efficiënter en lichter.
- Bijna onderhoudsvrij
Een traditionele ketting is gemaakt van metaal en moet je smeren met olie. Hierdoor wordt deze vies en gaat het bovendien roesten. De tandwielen slijten daarnaast ook nog eens. De belt drive heeft dit allemaal niet. Het systeem is dus zeer onderhoudsvriendelijk.
- Stil met de belt drive fiets
Het metaal van een een fietsketting maakt geluid, zeker naar verloop van tijd. De belt drive is zeer stil, zelfs het schakelen hoor je niet.
- Gaat langer mee
De belt drive slijt veel minder hard en roest niet, daardoor gaat hij gemiddeld tot vier keer langer mee dan een traditionele ketting.
- Geen vieze handen/kleding
Zoals we al vertelden hoef je de belt drive niet te smeren met olie. Vuil hecht daardoor minder snel aan de ketting. Kom je met je broek tegen de riem aan tijdens het fietsen, dan is deze niet meteen vies. Bovendien hoef je wanneer je fiets wel vies is, deze alleen maar met de tuinslang schoon te spuiten.
- Geen kettingkast
De kettingkast behoort bij de belt drive fiets tot het verleden tijd. Moet je dus wel een keer bij de riem voor onderhoud? Dan kun je er dus gemakkelijk bij.
De nadelen van een fiets met belt drive
- Prijs
Belt drive fietsen zijn iets duurder dan fietsen met een traditionele ketting. Uiteraard komt dit ook doordat ze nu nog schaarser zijn. Naarmate deze fietsen meer gemeengoed worden zal dit nadeel dus verdwijnen. Ook bespaar je veel kosten omdat ze vrijwel geen onderhoud nodig hebben, dit compenseert de duurdere aanschaf.
- Geen derailleur
Een belt drive is niet te gebruiken in combinatie met een derailleur. Dit komt omdat de riem niet van tandwiel kan wisselen. De versnelling zit in de naaf, je zit daarmee vast aan een beperkt aantal versnelling. De belt drive zit daarmee bijvoorbeeld ook nog niet op racefietsen. Echter zit ook deze ontwikkeling niet stil. Zo gaat de versnellingsbak van Pinion inmiddels al tot 18 versnellingen.
- Speciaal frame nodig
Denk je; ik monteer een riemaandrijving op mijn huidige fiets? Denk nog even verder na. De belt drive is helaas niet op ieder frame te monteren, er is een speciaal soort frame nodig voor het monteren en demonteren van de riem.
